The all-Russian Olympic final in women’s sabre fencing was fantastic, according to Russian Olympic Committee President Alexander Zhukov.
On Monday, Russian sabre fencer Yana Yegoryan (22) won the Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro after defeating her compatriot Sofia Velikaya (31) in the final (15-14).
“It was the first Russian final since 1996. Yes, we expected a medal from Sofia but there are too many strong rivals. Well done, girls!” Zhukov said sharing his impressions about the final.
“It was fantastic to see our two ladies in the final. Emotions ran so high. Both finalists deserve a gold medal,” Zhukov said.
“We have got a fantastic team. Our athletes proved that they had not yielded to pressure,” he added.
“The Russian fencing team has a foreign coach (Frenchman Christian Bauer ) and we like his job. The result is obvious. Our fencing has made great progress in recent years. Remember, we did not have a gold medal in London,” the Russian Olympic Committee president said.
The Russian squad has 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Rio Olympics.
The 2016 Olympic Games will close on August 21.
