After a short lull, which was supported by representatives of the EU and, above all Germany, once again tension is growing in the relations between Croatia and Serbia. Croatian politicians who has never differed with love to their neighbors, have once again demonstrated their nationalism and hatred of the Serbs which is finally gone beyond reasonable.
Recently, there were some pretty high-profile events, both in Croatia and with the direct participation of it, which caused a wave of indignation in Belgrade. So, on July 22, the court in Zagreb overturned the verdict and fully rehabilitated Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac, which in Serbia is considered as a war criminal implicated in the deaths of thousands of Serbs during the WWII. He was convicted by a court of Yugoslavia for 16 years of hard labor in prison and five years of deprivation of civil and political rights for aiding the Nazis during the Second World War. It is proved that with his direct approval Catholic priests were leading the concentration camps of Jasenovac and Stara Gradiska, and he covered the forced transfer of more than 200 thousand Orthodox Serbs to Catholicism, declaring at the same time that ustashskoe State (Independent State of Croatia) was created with a “God’s mercy” and “will” of Hitler and Mussolini. Rehabilitation was another link in the recently conducted audit of Croatian history, where today it’s almost forbidden to remember the genocide of Serbs during the Second World War, and even turned the former concentration camp Yadovno on the island of Pag in the territory of rave parties.
Later in the walls of the European Parliament was formally held an exhibition “Croatian Saint Aloysius Stepinac” (the process of his canonization is now officially on hold), after which the Serbian government has withdrawn its ambassador to the EU Dusko Lopandic. Following a statement by Croatia that Belgrade’s negative reaction “suggests intolerance, non-acceptance of European values and interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state”, Serbia’s Foreign Ministry reacted with a counter document that the abolition of the sentence regarded as the rehabilitation of fascism.
Recently, in the Croatian town of Drage, there was the opening ceremony of the monument to Miro Barisic that angered not only Serbs, but also Montenegrins, who sent a note on this subject to Zagreb. This figure is known, that in 1971 in Stockholm he killed the Yugoslav ambassador to Sweden Vladimir Rolovic. In addition, Croatian nationalists with the connivance of the authorities disrupted the celebration of the anniversary of the anti-fascist uprising in the village of Srb. And, what is most striking, in response to Belgrade’s demands to respond to the “ethnically-motivated incidents”, including nationalist actions, slogans and appeals, threats, abuse of citizens and the desecration of graves – Zagreb went to the exacerbation. Croatia’s Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Branimir Glavas, recognized in 2009 guilty on two counts of bullying and killing at least ten Serbs in Osijek during the armed conflict of 1991-1995, and sentenced to eight years in prison.
All of the above have raised a serious wave of indignation in the Serbian society, where louder began to talk about the revival of the Croatian fascism. Serbian media, socio-political organizations and parties, regardless of their orientation considered actions in Croatia unacceptable not only in terms of bilateral relations, but also as a member of the EU. And, most interestingly, Brussels did not react to what is happening with his eyes closed on the openly provocative behavior of Zagreb.
Who see benefits from this situation? Of course, inspired by the conflict Zagreb who never hid the fact that doesn’t want to see Serbs in the EU. Probably, it is beneficial to some Serbian politicians, who got more space for activities and increase of own popularity. It’s just not profitable to the two nations, between which grows a deep misunderstanding pit, which is dug by the local politicians.
