Celebrations on the occasion of Abkhazia’s Independence Day will take place Friday across the country.
“Traditionally, President Raul Khadzhimba and other representatives of Abkhazia’s leadership, war veterans, the public, schoolchildren will lay flowers to the Glory Memorial in Sukhum, where the remains of Abkhazian army soldiers are buried,” according to the government staff.
Units of the Abkhazian Armed Forces, the Russian Federal Security Service’s Border Department in Abkhazia and the 7th Russian military base stationed in Gudauta will hold a parade. Overall, up to 600 servicemen will be involved.
On September 30 23 years ago, the Georgia-Abkhazia war ended. The republic considers it the Patriotic War of Abkhazia of 1992-1993. Hostilities lasted 413 days and ended in Abkhazia’s victory. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized Abkhazia’s independence.
