The date of a meeting of the Normandy Four (Germany, Russia, Ukraine, France) leaders on resolving the crisis in Ukraine has not been determined yet, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told a news conference in Berlin on Wednesday.
“No specific date yet,” he said answering a question from a TASS correspondent. He added that “such a meeting depends on the progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”
“The chancellor discussed the conflict in Ukraine with the Russian and French presidents on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hangzhou,” Seibert said. “They discussed the possibility of a new Normandy format meeting at the level of the heads of state and government.”
In late August, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko announced that he was able to reach an agreement with Paris and Berlin on resuming the talks in this format. He did not rule out that the next meeting could take place in the German capital.
Meanwhile, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier on Wednesday that no meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart is planned. Speaking about the possibility of a meeting in the Normandy format that would involve the German and French leaders, he recalled Putin’s words that “major efforts of the ministries are needed.”
“It makes sense to meet only after this work has been done, and the meeting’s possible results are clear,” Peskov said. “We have not advanced this far yet,” he added.
