Charlie Hebdo recently used the haunting image of Aylan Kurdi’s dead body in a couple of its illustrations, ridiculing not only the sentiments of Syrian refugees but also the death of the little boy whose body washed upon a Turkish beach a few days back.
In one of the cartoons, the image of Aylan’s dead body is drawn under a McDonald-like billboard which reads ‘Two Menus Of Children For The Price Of One’ in French, with a sideline text saying ‘So Close To His Goal’.
In another illustration, the magazine has drawn parallel between Jesus Christ, who’s shown walking on water, and the child who drowned in the sea. The disturbing cartoon is titled as ‘The Proof that Europe is Christian’ with the text reading that ‘Christians walk on waters, Muslim children sink’.
While a larger part of the internet crowd is shaming Charlie Hebdo for the ‘insensitive’ illustrations. there has been a counter argument suggesting that the cartoons are actually a mockery of the attitude of Europeans towards the refugees.
We don’t think using Aylan Kurdi’s illustration with such captions, even if the intention was to put a message across was fair. This time around, we say #IAmNotCharlieHebdo.
