There is NO Russian invasion, in fact. Not in Crimea, nor in Ukraine.
What the American people seem to have forgotten is their own history.
What you have in Ukraine today is a civil war.
Like the great American civil war which brought a motley array of half-disjointed states into a single, unified, great country and State.
This struggle for unity was interconnected with a struggle to abolish a hideous institution, slavery.
Slave owners wanted to impose their might the country over, and in fact they did it usually ever after the death of George Washington at the very least.
The development of the country was linked with elimination of that institution, not due to moral issues but because it ran against both its unity AND its sane economic development.
The Southerner slavocracy were best partners with the great power of their time, Britain. There were many in the North who sided with them, particularly the overseas traders at the seaports.
It was the American toiling people who saved the unity of the country. Not because they hated slavery but because they reasonably feared that slavery might cover the whole of the country as it was demonstrated in the “Kansas Nebraska issue”.
Now, watch Ukraine. You have a group of people in the West of the country who want to sell the country out to Western multinationals. They want to turn Ukraine into a subservient economy to the West, an economy that WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE IN ITS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT WITH THE INDUSTRIES OF THEIR PARTNERS.
Thus, just as it happened in the United States, the industrial areas went to war.
Learn your history, Americans, so that you will be able to understand the ugly place you are occupying in Ukraine today. You are favoring the Southerner slavocrats of our times if you take the side the British commercial community took: you are defending the freedom and right of people to own slaves so those people can sell you cheap cotton, drenched in Afro-american blood but who cares. And, less romantically, at the price of turning nil the American effort to build a modern, industrial, COMPETITIVE WITH YOU, manufacturing and industrial sector. For those merchants, and for you if you support the rabid gang at Kiev, the industrial areas to the East of Ukraine, as well as the industrial states in the North of USA in the 1860s, were “freedom killers”. It is not a matter of chance that Abraham Lincoln not famously enough said that “what is the freedom for the sheep is the most hideous form of slavery for the wolf”. Be serious then: support Kiev today, support Jefferson Davis yesterday, AND SUPPORT RACISM IN THE UNITED STATES OF OUR DAYS.

Yes, my fellow americans need to review our history and learn to think for themselves instead of believing everything we hear on Fox News.

I must disagree with the author of this article. The American civil war had nothing to do with slavery but with states rights and the right not to answer to a central authority.

Yes, you are right that there is similarity to the American Civil War. However, I am astounded that you compare the South as the bad guys? We fought the same damned Yankees Novorossiya is fighting now, under the same red and blue Saint Andrews Cross. Read up on the life of Robert E. Lee. Obama is your Lincoln.
