Globally, during the last few years, smear campaigns aimed at the humiliation of the great Victory over Nazism and fascism in World War II have significantly increased. In 1945, it seemed that the victory was final, but the werewolf lurking under the protection of some governments soon made its presence felt in many parts of the world, hiding behind different masks.
The Russians and other people of the former Soviet Union did not tolerate the revenge and took to the streets. People had photographs of relatives, participants of that terrible war, in gratitude to, in memory of, and in commitment to those who fought heroically and defended the world from the Nazi plague.
The first “Immortal regiment” march was held in the Russian city of Tomsk in 2012 and it was attended by 5,000 people. Many cities of Russia and the world liked the idea. In 2013, the marches were in Kazakhstan and Ukraine, and in 2014, this initiative spread to Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Israel.
In 2015, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory in the great Patriotic war, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, together with 500,000 people, participated in the “Immortal regiment” march with a portrait of his father. On 9th May 2015,this event in Russia was attended by about four million people.
In protest against the boycott of European leaders who rejected the invitation in Moscow to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Victory over fascism, people from many European countries arrived in Moscow to take part in the “Immortal regiment” march on Red Square. Portraits of relatives and friends who fought in World War II or participated in anti-fascist movements in their countries were visible.
This was a great moment of unity between people of different generations and people who demonstrated their rejection of fascism and Nazism, defended their story, and showed that there’s still a force in the world that will not allow them to forget or rewrite history.
This year over 30 cities around the world will join this initiative.
On Sunday, May 8th, “the Immortal regiment” will take place on the streets of Madrid, and on Monday 9th May in Moscow and other Russian cities.
The marchers in Madrid will meet in the square in front of the Museum named after Queen Sofia at 11:30 (from Atocha metro station can be reached on foot), and will take place from Atocha street to the Main square (Plaza Mayor), where at approximately 15:00 a festive meeting will be held.
Taking into account the importance and symbolism of this event, we invite you to join us in person or as part of an organization, or to share this information with your colleagues and friends to participate in this promotion by yourself or with your family and make this day a big and unforgettable holiday, but also in day of memory of the heroic struggle against fascism and awareness of the need to protect world peace and equality between people of all nationalities.
We hope that this event will become a tradition thanks to a civil initiative and will be held in many other cities.
We will not allow history to be rewritten! To forget is to repeat.
Attention: please do not bring flags or posters that are not related to the Second world war and anti-fascist movements in order to not dilute the meaning of this day and to concentrate on the struggle against fascism and the great Victory.
The quality of the photos:
Photographs should be black and white and sized 24.5 cm by 33.5 cm in diameter, and of good quality, if possible, during the Second world war or resistance in each country. If you have the originals of a small size, we suggest to not increase them at home or print shops, which are not involved in professional image processing, because image quality may deteriorate. We offer to call in a professional photo studio or email us at this address to ensure that we help to enhance your photos and make posters: [email protected]
You can use portraits drawn and scanned in black and white. If you don’t have photos of relatives or friends who participated in the war, you can make a portrait of the favourite hero of the war or resistance, and join the ranks of the “Immortal regiment”. The banner must include: full name, surname and title (if any), and the regiment in which front he served written under the photograph on a white background, clear font, large enough letters to be legible at a distance of several meters.
A photo can be glued to the a board, polystyrene or other vertical support at A3 size (45 by 30 cm). The banner shall be securely attached to a stick support of sufficient length (60 cm) in order to conveniently carry it without raising the hands.
Under the photo you can add a star with the ribbon of St. George.
