The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) will open from 8 to 9 new observation posts in Donetsk and Lugansk republics, Gernot Erler, the German government’s authorized representative for Germany’s OSCE chairmanship, said on Wednesday.
We are planning to open from 8 to 9 new observation posts. We are currently holding a tender for equipping the SMM with additional equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and night vision instruments, Erler told a briefing adding that the OSCE could expand its functions by using extra equipment.
Erler said that the SMM was also planning to increase the number of monitors to 650, 570 of whom would work in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
If it were not for the mission, we would not have known anything at all about the situation in that region, Erler stressed.
