Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto will discuss a number of topical international issues, including the situation in Ukraine and Syria and the current shape of international relations following Britain’s referendum, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told the media.
“The entire set of bilateral relations, of course. As you may know, there are many specific projects that cement our trading and economic ties,” Peskov said. “Plus the international dimension: Russia-EU relations in general, the exchange of opinion on the most topical international issues.” He added that “it may be Ukraine and it may be Syria.”
Peskov pointed out that Russia would be interested to hear the opinion of our Finnish counterparts about the new system of coordinates that may take shape after Britain’s referendum.”
“The agenda is vast. After the narrow format meeting and talks between delegations Putin and Niinisto will speak at a news conference,” Peskov said.
As he dwelt on bilateral relations, Peskov said that themes related to the Russian-Finnish border and migration might be discussed, if the Finnish side decided to raise them.
“We know that this theme is touched upon traditionally. If our Finnish counterparts bring it up, there will certainly be such a discussion,” Peskov said. “I know that there was an instruction to the agencies concerned to keep in touch with each other and to maintain online contacts. I’m not prepared to say now how intensive they are, but such instructions were issued after the Moscow talks.”
