Syria peace talks have been suspended until February 25, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Wednesday after a meeting with the Riyadh-formed Syrian opposition delegation. The talks are on pause, de Mistura has said adding they would resume on February 25. “I have concluded frankly that after the first week of preparatory talks there is more work to be done, not only by us but by the stakeholders,” he said. “I have indicated from the first day that I won’t talk for the sake of talking.” The UN special envoy for Syria said that the talks came to a temporary halt after the sides had focused on procedural issues rather than on concrete tasks aimed at resolving the Syria humanitarian crisis. At the same time, de Mistura refuted a suggestion that military operations ongoing in Syria, including Russian air strikes, may have caused problems in the talks. De Mistura announced he was leaving for London where a conference on the Syria humanitarian crisis was scheduled to be held on Thursday, February 4.
